High Cholesterol May Have You Living on the Edge!
At my last annual physical exam my doctor found that I had a very high level of cholesterol. After he took the time to explain just how dangerous this was, I decided that I needed a lot more information about my condition. I’ve learned a lot since then, and have now gotten my cholesterol under control. Now, I’d like to use this small space to explain why controlling your cholesterol levels is so important. Maybe you’ll also better understand that getting foods high in cholesterol out of your diet is very beneficial.
Cholesterol is a vital building block for your body. It acts like a kind of mortar for your cells, holding them to together to make tissue. It’s also made into a bile acid and used for digestion.
Most, if not all, of the cholesterol your body needs is made in your liver. An enzyme known as low density lipoproteins, or LDL, delivers the cholesterol to your cells. Cells that have enough cholesterol when the LDL shows up will just say “No, Thanks” and send the enzyme on it’s way.
The problem is, LDL won’t carry left over cholesterol back to your liver. The LDL will leave the extra cholesterol on the inner wall of an artery. Sooner or later, the deposits will choke off the artery, starving the tissue that is further down. This is a major cause of strokes and heart attacks.
I understand that this article is very basic. I only wish to get you thinking about your own cholesterol levels.
